A reason you have taken this class? To further my experience and education in the field of Microbiology.
What were your most favorite activities and assignments and why? My most favorite activities were disease presentations! I thoroughly enjoy getting to learn more about and research the different diseases/infections that still plague people today.
What were your least favorite activities and assignments and why? My least favorite activities were some of the labs- more specifically the ones that multiple parts to a single lab. I found that it took nearly an entire week for most bacteria to incubate in my house, leaving me little to no time to do the second portion of that same lab. It was very frustrating.
How you will be able to use materials learned in BI 234? I will be able to use the materials and information learned in this class for nursing school and any future jobs that are related to the medical field.
Your suggestions on the BI 234 online course improvements. All-in-all it was a good class.

  2. I enjoyed the different labs the most. It was an excelled class, but it nice to almost be done. I took class for nursing pre-requisite.

    06-24-19 – 07-28-19
It was a requirement for nursing pre requisites
Most favorite Gram Staining I like doing the process to get the outcome and then I would hold it up to the light to look at it. Also the one with the antibiotics I thought that was interesting.
Least favorite would have to be the food one. I am just I have watched food in a different way get mold and so I dont know didnt find it as interesting.
It will hopefully help as I proceed with nursing and understanding how things go to get cultured and the process it takes to get those results.
I think this class is laid out nice but is very time consuming when you are taking a full time schedule so it does take up a lot of your time.

  4. My name is Lisa Parazoo and I am taking this course during the 2019 summer term. The dates are between June 26th and July 28th. The reason I took this class is because it was a pre-requisite for the nursing program. However, I found the class to be very entertaining and not what I expected. My favorite thing about this class were the labs that I got to do at home. I have two boys and they both got to sit and watch as I worked on them and even helped a little bit when they could. It was fun to see them show so much interest and ask a lot of questions. My least favorite thing was taking the exams. They were long and some of the information I did not remember leaning or reading about. I also have test anxiety, and even though testing at home makes it so much better, I still get nervous. This class is going to help me in my nursing career and will give me a better understanding of what I need to know and do to complete projects put before me. Personally, I believe that a better study guide would have helped me to do better on the exams.

•Reason you have taken this class? — It’s a prerequisite to LCC’s Dental Hygiene program.

•What were your most favorite activities and assignments and why? — Though the labs were difficult at times, I still really enjoyed them because they are very hands on. It was fun watching the bacteria grow.

•What were your least favorite activities and assignments and why? — I found it very difficult to read the textbook. It’s a lot of dense information and I had a hard time staying focused and retaining information.

•How you will be able to use materials learned in BI 234? — Having a better understanding of bacteria, their various processes, and how to manage them, will help me as a dental hygienist because I’ll be around a lot of oral bacteria.

•Your suggestions on the BI 234 online course improvements. — No suggestions. It’s a difficult class, but I think it’s put together as well as it could be given that it’s a condensed, online course.

  6. I am Melissa Carl. I’m taking this class summer term 2019. I started June 14th and will finish July 28th. I have taken this class to finish my prerequisites. My favorite experiment was the first one. It was fun to take samples of things in the house and see how terrible I did of cleaning and disinfecting the areas swabbed. The discussion posts were kind of interesting and I liked that hey didn’t take too much time. What I struggled with during this class was the quizzes and tests. I had a hard time finding the answers to the tests from the information that was provided to us. I feel that I excelled on the areas of the tests that included internal parasites because of my parasitology class I took for my veterinary technician classes. This class seemed to be more difficult than it should have been. I also don’t understand the purpose of the presentations. The week to week lay out was amazing and very helpful on knowing what was needed to be done each week. The Canvas page was very easy to navigate. I think the questions for the quizzes and exams need to match the material better. I don’t see how working with yeast parallels with helminths and their life cycles.

  7. 1). I am taking this class to complete one of my nursing prerequisites. (6-16-2019)-(7-28-2019)
2). My favorite activities would have to be the group discussion assignments. I found a lot of the topics we discussed to be very engaging/interesting.
3). My least favorite assignments would have to be some of the labs because of the large amount of time it takes to complete and how tedious they can be.
4). The information/methods learned in microbiology are very important and will help me greatly as I move on to study nursing.
5). One thing I would suggest in order to improve the class would be to have some form of practice test for each the exams each week. This way we can have an idea of what to expect on the test and the practice test provides us a way to accurately gauge our understanding of the chapters assigned each week.

  8. Your name – Chris McCaskill

I took this class in order to complete the prerequisites for applying to PA school.

What were your most favorite activities and assignments and why – I loved the labs!! It was one of the more fun things I’ve done in a classroom setting. There was a learning curve at first with how to do certain things like heating the nutrient agar without wasting it. Once I figured that out it was really fun.

How you will be able to use materials learned in BI 234 – This class will benefit me a great deal as I go forward and study things like Pathophysiology, diseases and pharmacology.

Your suggestions on the BI 234 online course improvements – I had no real issues with the class. The only issue was some of the labs required more time than I had expected and those labs kinda creep up on you without any warning. I enjoyed the class immensely otherwise!

Mrs. Green was awesome and her feedback was timely, valuable and beneficial across the board.

A reason you have taken this class: I want to go into a healthcare profession and I know it is a prerequisite for at least nurse practitioners. I also believe it is helpful if I decide to pursue other healthcare professions. I also really enjoy science and biology in general, so this class definitely peaked my interest. In addition, being online allowed me to take this class. I know that is more than one reason, but I took this class for multiple reasons.

Most favorite activities and assignments and why: My favorite activities and assignments were actually the additional videos that accompany the lectures. I found them very helpful as another means of understanding the material. I also enjoyed the field trip. I know that this is not an activity, but I really like that this class is only 5 weeks.

How you will be able to use materials learned in BI 234: This will help me when I am in a graduate school for a healthcare profession and for the rest of my career when I am a healthcare professional. I have a better understanding of microbiology and its importance in the medical field and also the environment that surrounds us.

Your suggestions on the BI 234 online course improvements: Overall, I enjoyed this class. It was a lot of reading, work, and time, but I thought that the class taught me exactly what I had hoped it would. The only suggestions that I have are related to the labs and to the length of the course. The labs are very time consuming and require a lot of work, including having to buy materials not in the lab kits before starting some of the labs.

  10. • Jessica Gale
    • Summer 2018, June 25 to July 26
    • BI234 is a requirement for the nursing program
    • My favorite part of BI234 is Mrs. Green. I also enjoyed all the exams, including the final. I really feel like I learned a lot from the exams.
    • I did not enjoy the labs, but I already know that I will not enjoy the labs in any class.
    • I do not think that BI234 could be improved. Mrs. Green teaches a perfect course. Mrs. Green is an outstanding, an excellent, a superior professor. I really enjoyed Mrs. Green’s class.

  11. My name is Danielle Johnson. I took BI 234 during summer term of 2018, June through July. This class is a prerequisite for my major, dental hygiene. My favorite assignments in this class were the class discussions because I got to learn a lot from the other students in the class, as well as from the material. My least favorite assignments were the amount of reading and the labs, but only because this was an accelerated 5 week course. Other than the time constraint, the labs were actually very fun and helped in learning the material. I will use the material learned in this course to further my education in dental hygiene.

  12. I took this class in summer term 2018 to stay on track to have all pre-requisites done in order to apply for the Fall 2019 nursing program in Winter term. Since I am taking the other required bio courses in Fall 2018 I did not want to be overloaded or have any remaining credits outstanding when I am able to apply for the nursing program.

What were your most favorite activities and assignments and why? My favorite activities were the weekly discussion posts. This gave me a good opportunity to interact with my fellow classmates and see different perspectives and opinions about the course content. It was also a good opportunity for me to learn the material in a way that made better sense to me than trying to absorb everything in the book.

How you will be able to use materials learned in BI 234? I will be able to better observe my surroundings and relate other activities not previously associated with biology to more scientific applications.

  13. Your name: Stephanie Geiger
    I took this course June-July 2018 5 week condensed.
This class is a requirement for prerequisites for nursing.
I enjoyed learning how to grow things on agar, testing my soil and slide prep. It was interesting testing the things in my surroundings.
My least favorite thing was how much time it took to do the labs. Sometimes it was a struggle to get through it and make sure I was doing it correctly. In some cases it would’ve been nice to have a quick look at how the lab was going to go before doing it.
The things I have learned in this class will be helpful in the medical field to understand what is causing certain illnesses and why. It will also help me to be more aware of the organisms in my environment after growing them.

  14. My name is Michelle. I took this course during the summer of 2018. I am taking this class as a prerequeset to the RN program. I think my favorite activity would be the class discussions because I like the feedback and the positive support everyone got from their peers. I really didn’t like how much reading had to be done in a week. This was my first term back in school and it was a LOT of reading, of course it is an accelerated course. I will be able to use the information learned in this course by understanding microorganisms that cause the diseases in the patients I am working with. I think this class was great! Thanks for the positive feedback, it truly helped when I was feeling down about a grade or two.

  15. Thank you for taking the Introductory Microbiology course and for your much appreciated feedback! BI 234 students are THE BEST! 😉
